Goliath description |
---|
Goliath is described in the biblical Book of Samuel as a tall Philistine warrior who was defeated by young David in single combat. Post-Classical Jewish traditions stressed his status as the representative of paganism, in contrast to David, the champion of the God of Israel. Christian tradition sees in David's overcoming Goliath the victory of God's king over the enemies of God's helpless people and interprets this as prefiguring Jesus' victory over sin and the Church's victory over Satan. The phrase "David and Goliath" (or "David versus Goliath") is commonly used to refer to any underdog situation or contest where a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary. |
