| Segmental duplication are blocks of DNA ranging from 1 to 400kb in length. It is possible for them to be located at multiple sites within the genome as well as share more than 90% similarity of their sequence. [1] In addition, multiple studies have displayed a correlation between the location of segmental duplications and the regions of chromosome instability. This correlation leads to the suggestion that segmental duplications are mediators of over twenty-five different genomic disorders as well. Locations of these sequences of segmental duplication are shown to be flanked on both sides by large homologous repeats. This exposes the region to recurrent rearrangement by nonallelic homologous recombination, which leads to either deletion, duplication, or inversion of the original sequence.[1] |
