Orang Seletar (also known as Selitar or Slitar) are one of the 18 Orang Asli ethnic groups in Malaysia. They are classified under the Proto-Malay people group, which forms the three major people group of the Orang Asli. The Orang Seletar are also considered as part of the Sea Gypsies, natives of the Straits of Johor; separating Singapore from Peninsula Malaysia. * This little people live almost in the center of one of the most developed regions of the world, but remains virtually unknown to the general public. * In the north of Singapore is the Seletar River, where there were previously Seletar people who lived there, but it is unknown whether these people got their name from the name of the river, or vice versa. * Despite the proximity to developed civilization, the Seletar people still largely retain the traditional way of life. At the same time, developed society is getting stronger and stronger on the environment of their habitation. In the eyes of mangrove forests disappear, the sea is becoming more and more polluted. As a result, civilization inexorably deprives this ethnic group of its traditional livelihoods. The Seletar people have assimlated into the Malay community in Singapore, and they have big problems in Malaysia as well. The people are forced to fight for their future. * The Malaysian government counts as one of the Orang Asli, a group of indigenous Peninsular Malaysia, composed of 18 officially registered tribes. Orang Asli are sponsored special Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA), until 2011 it was called the Department of Orang Asli Affairs (Jabatan Hal Ehwal Orang Asli, JHEOA), the purpose of which is to raise the standard of living of the indigenous population to the average indicators of the country. * Although the Orang Seletar were originally part of the Orang Laut, the Malaysian government and JAKOA classifies Seletar people as one of the indigenous Proto-Malay tribes, one of the three Orang Asli subgroups today. It is one of the few indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia, whose lifestyle is connected with the sea, not with the tropical forest. * Proper name that these people would refer to themselves as Kon Seletar with the prefix "Kon-" or simply Kon; which is believed to have Mon-Khmer language origin. For comparison, in the Old Mon language and Middle Mon language, Kon means "a person belonging to a certain ethnic or social group".They speak in their own Orang Seletar language. |
