The most immediate flaw in this singular translation is to assume that the first portion, "Maol" , means servant or disciple of a Saint. For, if that were the case, it would follow that names like "Maolduin" (Muldoon) would be servant or follower of St. Doon As there is no St. Doon, or anything like it, how can this disparity be explained? Certainly, names such as Mulrooney and Mulholland receive a similar treatment, to that of "Maol Eoin", but that does not mean they are correct. Maolduin, translated from Gaelic into English, means fort (dun) on a thin, bald, or barren area of land. It does not mean servant of St. Fort.
