Caftan description |
---|
A kaftan or caftan (; Arabic: qafn) is a variant of the robe or tunic and has been worn by several cultures around the world for thousands of years. The kaftan is often worn as a coat or as an overdress, usually reaching to the ankles, and with long sleeves. It can be made of wool, cashmere, silk, or cotton, and may be worn with a sash. The kaftan is of ancient Mesopotamian origin and was worn by many middle-eastern ethnic groups. According to Gerhard Doerfer, the word originates from the old Turkish "kap ton", meaning "covering garment".Different styles, uses, and names for the kaftan vary from culture to culture. In regions with a warm climate, the kaftan is worn as a light-weight, loose-fitting garment. In some cultures, the kaftan has served as a symbol of royalty. |
